Consultations
Pre-purchase site assessment
Like a traditional Walk-about, the same items are covered, although the report is meant to give the potential homeowner an overview of items outside of the home much like a home inspection does for the structure to be purchased. An overview of concerns and positive elements will be addressed in the report. The potential homeowner may be present, or a time can be coordinated with the listing agent or homeowner if the property is for sale by owner (FSBO). The same fees and restrictions apply as from the On Site Walk-about.

On site walk-about
A private consultation will help you get started with site specific observational information for gardening, small scale farming or for something more specific, like raising chickens. During a traditional walk-about, time, water, wind and other energy flows, shade and areas difficult for growing will be addressed. Currently this service is available within a 2 hour drive-time radius of Bloomington, Indiana.
“As a prospective chicken keeper, I’m pleased to thank Jami Scholl for the comprehensive advice she provided us in a visit to our property. Based on her extensive experience, she advised us on breeds, coop placement, multiple runs (paddocks), fencing, and predator avoidance. With that new knowledge, I look forward to raising chickens soon.”
-Dave Parkhurst
The fee for a walk-about is $60 per hour within Monroe County, with an additional per mile charge if drive time is from one to two hours from Bloomington, Indiana. If you live farther than this, please contact me directly to talk about arrangements that will fit your specific needs. Phone, video and photo’s may be used if the distance is very great. A brief follow-up email with relevant information discussed during the walk-about will be sent within two weeks, and will be determined by current client case load. A report can be requested should you like one with more specific recommendations and a prioritization of what steps to take next from either an on-site walk-about or through alternative means of communication.
Inquiries may be sent through the contact page.
Presentations & Workshops
Will now be offered through Jami’s new business: élanterra: The Art of Resilience & Wellbeing.
For large or small groups
The topics I cover will have a permaculture design approach and stress personal aesthetic choices. The application of holistic design emphasizes integration of uses, thoughtful use of technology and dual systems. I teach workshop classes that cover both design and application, as well as classes that teach homesteading skills such as sewing, butter and yogurt making, keeping chickens and ducks, sauerkraut making, and other skills. Presentations and Workshops I have led in the past include:
- Art of the Garden: Permaculture & the Potager
- Eating in Season
- Urban Agriculture: A Victory For Good Health
- Applied Permaculture Design: Creating Your Urban Homestead
- Preserving the Harvest: An Overview of Techniques
Here is a letter I received from a former student:
Jami,
Hi, I took your Urban Agriculture class through the city of Bloomington in June 2009. I was looking for fruit trees and Brambleberry farm and came across a link to your web site, and remembered the class you taught. Since then I gardened with Mother Hubbard’s plots, and in my own plot, then I quit my job and apprenticed at a farm in Bedford in summer 2010, spent the winter of 2011 in Massachusetts working with heritage breed livestock, and came back home to Kentucky this summer to apprentice in Louisville. Now, I’ve gotten land and I’m starting my own farm this year, about 1-2 acres of diverse vegetables with perennial and fruit plantings too!
Anyway, seeing your site reminded me of how far I’ve come since then. Just wanted you to know that you are making a difference, in ways that many times you may not be able to see directly. I still remember your class and making rain barrels at your house and the urban agriculture ordinance meeting at the city council, and in a lot of ways that help set me on the path that I am still walking today!
So, thank you, for your work and teaching.
Best,
Chris
